oh the joy of having children explain the gospel to you. it seriously is my favorite thing EVER. i love hearing how they view God grace, its so simple to them. why do we complicate it so much? as adults we so often think our actions define our relationship with Christ, but its such a lie. he is is constant and unchanging, his unchanging character and how we serve him defines our identity (thank you Matt Lance).
this week was a rollercoaster. within the first few hours i felt like the worst counselsor EVER. seriously, i felt fully inadequate to even be there. Many of my girls had been going to the Tower since they were in second grade and knew a whole lot more than i did about how camp ran. One of my girls was so homesick that she cried every single time we stopped moving for a few minutes. The first night was awful. My maternal instincts were on really high alert and everytime a kid moved i woke up. and poor homesick girl, she just cried and cried and cried. one girl was sick and needed to go to the nurse and another was just a little bit homesick, but was able to settle down pretty easily. the next day we were late to EVERYTHING, and i wanted to cry. i hate feeling so disorganized and scattered. But then things changed in the strangest way. The girls hadn't listened to me very well when we were cleaning up that morning, so we got the dirtiest cabin in our cluster and had to use our free time to clean. during that time, the girls realized that they needed to listen to me.
the rest of the week: GOLDEN.
one night stood out in particular: we were having a deep conversation before snack and somehow salvation came up. my homesick girls was like "what's salvation?" Before I could even get a word out the girls of my cabin began explaining God's grace and salvation better than i ever could've. it was so cool. So the homesick girls was like "okay, I'd like to ask Jesus in my heart, but not today. Tomorrow. At the top of the treehouse."
i laughed and told her to meet me there during free time. well... during free time we got caught up in the pool and couldn't make it to the treehouse in time. so i pulled her aside and we had a chat for like 10 minutes in the pool. after having her explain salvation back to me so that i knew she understood, she accepted Christ. SO cool.
Jesus can work anywhere... even in the shallow end of the pool.
